Chokladkrokant Bredbar

Saw this while shopping at Ikea and found it interesting.

It's a chocolate spread with butterscotch pieces in the spread. Pair this with bread or simply eat it on its own. I believe that they have converted the popular Diam chocolate into a chocolate spread. So Diam lovers will love this.

Personally it is a tad too sweet for my liking. The butterscotch pieces provided a crunch to the spread but it got stuck in between my teeth. Which actually can be rather annoying.

It's less than $5. Is it worth the buy? I would say it is.

Salmon Sashimi

Sashimi, Japanese delicacy, consisting of very fresh raw meat or fish sliced into thin pieces.

I never could understand why people love raw meat or fish and would cringe at the sight of people eating it. Because being a Food & Nutrition teacher, I teach students about the dangers of consuming raw food and food that are not cooked through. Until one day, I didn't know what came into me and the rest was history!

If you must have salmon sashimi, do to to Sushi Tei. They serve decent sashimi that's fresh and juicy. But don't forget to dip it in some wasabi and soya sauce.

Remember that no matter how fresh the sashimi is, eat in moderation. You do not know how much raw food your body can take.

Macarons from Canele

The very first time macarons and I first met was in Canele. And after that first encounter, I was in love with this sweet, decadent treat.

It has been a while since I had macarons from Canele. And whenever I wanted to get some, there would only be a few flavored left. So when I saw that they still had a range of flavours left, I decided to buy it!

I bought 6 flavours, from the top cookies and cream, hazelnut, dark chocolate, salted caramel, milk chocolate and cranberry. They didn't disappoint and it was still as good as it was the first time I tried it.

The plus point is the way they packed the macarons. Neatly packed in a row and covered.

High Society Cafe

When I think of the High Society Cafe, I would think that the service and sweets would be of standard and quality. Well I was wrong.

I ordered a passion fruit and orange meringue tart and, chocolate and lemon macaron.

The macarons were disappointing. I had expected the lemon macaron to have some degree of tartness to it. But there wasn't. I felt like I had eaten lemon cream macaron instead. The chocolate macaron was substandard.

I have developed a love for citrus tarts lately and would always jump at the chance at buying any kind of citrus sweets. So I was hugely disappointed with the tart. For a meringue tart, you would expect meringue with smooth consistency. One that melts in your mouth. The meringue was sandy and it was clear that fine sugar was used instead of icing sugar and that the meringue was not well-mixed or that the sugar to egg white ratio was more than needed. It was a waste as the filling bad that tart taste I was looking for.

Rich & Good Swiss Roll

It's interesting how people come up with unique names for their shops. And so to call their shop Rich and Good Cake Shop shows how gutsy the owner was to claim that the cakes sold here are rich in flavour and good.

I have once observed for myself how long the queue can get especially during the peak lunch hour. And some of my colleagues have been raving about this shop.

And since I was in the area, after searching high and low for a costume to wear for my staff dinner, I decided to make a trip down to the shop to get myself one of their Swiss rolls.

When I got there, the queue was manageable. But because it was a warm day and I was trying my hardest to control my bladder, the queue felt like TORTURE to me. I decided to make light the situation and started talking to one of the patrons in front of me just to kill time and chase that thought of going to a toilet.

Not long after, the shop assistant came out to take some orders, which I'm guessing so that they would know how much of the specific flavours to prepare. Durian seemed to be a hot flavour with the crowd and apparently one of their best flavour.

Oh the shop looked like the cake shop from the past. Definitely the common concept for most of the shop around this street.

As you may recall, I was having some biological obstacles, so I could not wait 20 minutes for the durian flavour to be ready. So I took what was readily available, kaya. Kaya is also one of their best flavour.

The kaya filling was spread evenly and was relatively generous. The cake was soft and fluffy and paired with the kaya filling, was an overall moist texture.

Would I consider queuing for another flavour in future? Maybe.

If you have time and love sweet treats, then why not beat the heat or rain and join in the queue.

Toast sticks, cheesy French toast and Coffee

Coffee/tea/milo, toast and soft boiled egg, a breakfast combination that's almost familiar to most people I know. My late nenek would prepare bread toasted with butter and sugar, a cup of warm milo and 1 soft boil egg mixed with kicap manis and pepper. Having breakfast at Ya Kun reminds me of the many breakfast I had at my late maternal grandparents' house.

Instead of ordering the usual kaya butter toast, I decided to try something new, Toast stick, and paired it with a cup of coffee.

The toast sticks were prepared on the spot. The bread was assembled before being dipped in the batter and deep-fried till crispy and golden brown. It was served with their signature kaya spread. The bread was soaked in oil and you could see it when you press the fork against it. I had expectations of the cheese melting upon slicing, and I was disappointed because it didn't melt as expected. The kaya spread and toast complimented each other rather well. If you are on a diet, I would suggest you avoid this.

My friend tried the Cheesy French Toast and she bought 2 slices because she thought that it would not be filling. It's their normal French toast with cheese slices in between, served with their kaya spread. One is enough, especially if you are not very hungry. My friend and I felt that it would have been better if it was paired with chili sauce.

Macaron-Choux what???

When I saw this interesting cream puff with a small piece of Macaron on top of it, I told myself that I must try it. And so I did!

Each Macaron-Choux was going for $3 a piece and because I wanted it in a box, I bought 4 pieces, vanilla bean, dark chocolate, lemon and hazelnut praline.

Each Choux pastry, besides have a small piece of Macaron stuck on top, is filled with flavoured cream.

Lately, my palate is leaning towards all things tart, so I personally felt that the lemon flavoured one was the best. Vanilla bean is not too bad, the cream was smooth with just the right amount of vanilla. Hazelnut praline was not too bad too, like the vanilla bean, the cream had a smooth and thick consistency.

It was a good effort to try to merge Choux pastry with Macaron, and at the same time, a novel idea. However, I was afraid that the Macaron would break into crumbled on the first bite or too hard to be bitten. But I was wrong. And interestingly, the pair worked well together.

Be prepared to wait for about 5 - 10 minutes as the staff prepare the pastry on the spot.

Sri Bistari Famous Changi Village Ayam Penyet

My friends and I happened to around Joo Chiat searching for costumes for our staff dinner. And spotted the shop and decided to give it a shot to see how famous the stall was.

This was the entrance to the shop. Just from the chairs lined at the shop you can tell that they are prepared for a crowd especially during lunch and dinner hours.

The interior of the shop is relatively small with a modern touch. And since it was not the peak hour, we did not have to wait long to get a seat.

Food was served 5 minutes after we placed our order. We were pleasantly surprised at the portion size of our ayam penyet. The rice was flavourful and if I was not on a diet, I would have definitely finished the entire portion. The rice from the ayam penyet I have tasted did not have the same flavour like the one here, what I normally tasted was just plain rice. While you can tell that the rice was cooked using the stock from the chicken bones and ginger. And the end product is a flavour chicken rice outcome that complimented the dish.

The sambal was a dark red and you could tell that you are in for 'spicy and hot' adventure. It was extremely spicy, especially for me with not a very high threshold for spicy food. But it was what I would call 'power'!! I guess I know why they served a big portion of rice.

The chicken, although double fried, was still moist and not over-cooked. The exterior was crispy and had a lot of flavour.

I would recommend this stall to everyone and it's definitely worth a second visit.

I don't have the exact address, but it's located at the shop houses opposite Evertop Restaurant.

That old school waffle

How many of you love those waffle sold at your friendly neighbour cake shops? I am a huge fan of such waffles and trust me when I say that I will hunt for the best waffle and even crave for them.

Thankfully for me, there is one near my place that sells waffles I feel is of my standard. It has the right amount of flavour from the pandan essence. And unlike most waffle shops, it is cooked through and not like those doughy like ones which are chewy when you try to chew on them. The waffles also have that signature crunchy edge which I feel is another important component of a good waffle

Magnum Singapore Pleasure Store

After seeing the numerous posting by friends who went to the Magnum Pleasure Store, I had to go down and give it a try.

For $7, you are given an option of 2 toppings, chocolate coating (dark, milk or white) and chocolate drizzle (dark, milk or white).

Overall I felt that there was nothing special about how the ice cream tasted as it was just your typical magnum ice cream that you can get from the shop with the exception of choice of toppings and chocolate.

What I did not like was the reply from the staff when I asked if I could sit in and enjoy my ice cream. Their reply was that I could only sit in if I purchase something from the menu because it was the peak hour for them. When I looked around, there were empty seats and no queue! So why can't we just sit and enjoy our ice cream? Being a considerate consumer, I would definitely leave and not hog the table if I see a large crowd waiting for a table. For those intending to go and want to dine in but not get anything from their menu, please go during the weekdays.

Macarons by 2sweetteeth

My love for macarons started 4 years ago. And there was no looking back since then. I tried making one years ago and failed. So I turned to macarons baked by others.

2sweetteeth is a small home business that was opened by a good friend a few years ago. Her macarons are really good with the right crunch and crisp. The macarons are not diabetic sweet and the fillings range from chocolate ganache, mint chocolate and a few other which I can't recall. Her macarons are as good as the ones from macaron shops such Caneles and Bakerzin.

She also does customized macarons using fondant to create words or shapes.

For the Muslims out there, she operates in a non-halal kitchen.

This is the work she has done for my party.

Follow her on IG and like her FB page, 2Sweethteeth.

One of her current popular orders are the minions which i I feel is really good. These are 2 pictures of her work that were taken from her IG.

Just a little hello

Friends who know me, know how often I post pictures of food made by me and from my cafe hopping and eating adventures.

Recently I chanced up this app, Burrple, and wanted to upload pictures of food that I had taken after hunting down this particular cafe my colleague often frequent. There in this app, I was able to give my input on I felt about the food.

That thought left me excited and motivated to create a food blog where I can share my bakes and cooks and food from my many foodie adventures.

Who knows, this could be the start of my blogging career.

To sum it up, I guess this blog is for me to share with my friends, my many food adventures.
